Some of you may know that for the last year I’ve been hanging out with Josh from JD Fundamental. Basically, I had a pretty bad back injury that ACC wouldn’t help me fix (typical, and a story for another time), so I decided to take my health into my own hands – with what I’d like to say was a little bit of help…but to be honest with you, it was a lot of help – from Josh.
Fast forward, I am now able to walk properly, I am in little to no pain and I’ve been equipped with great advice and tools to live a much healthier and active life, thanks to Josh!

Two days ago I reinstalled Instagram after taking a 3-4 week break. The main reason for reinstalling was to check to see I’d been sent any messages as my IG account is a business one.
When checking my messages, I found a notification from Ashleigh saying I had been tagged in one of her stories. It was a story announcing the fact that I would be sharing some health and fitness ideas via her page over the coming weeks… whoops. In taking my social media break I had completely forgot that I had agreed to do this for her.
Ironically though, this seems like a pretty good place to start for health and fitness advice with the Christmas holidays only a few days away.
My first piece of advice, and something that I’m always trying to improve as I’m far from perfect myself, is to consider disconnecting from the social interwebs for a short period of time. Without sounding super cliche, Christmas should be about presence, not presents. And to be fair, this stands true anytime of the year.
The act of disconnecting to improve your health goes a lot deeper than just being present around Christmas time as well.
When you think about some of the main pillars of health – Food, sleep, movement, relationships and so on, one of the main reasons we lose our ability to thrive as humans is our disconnection from the environments that made us human in the first place.
I would argue that the benefits of spending the majority of your life in the real world, where we have face to face contact and encounter real experiences – things like seeing live music, eating out with friends and family, or walking through nature (and truly being present in these moments, it doesn’t count if you’re at a gig but spend half the show behind your Snapchat app), are more fundamental to your health than even the obvious things like nutrition or exercise.
So enjoy your holidays, take a chill pill, and maybe disconnect from technology a little. It has its place for sure, but it shouldn’t be a priority.
