And in the process, am teaching myself to be happy. Let me explain.
Diets. We’ve all tried a few. One time I did the cabbage soup diet and it was seriously the most disgusting thing I’ve ever inflicted on myself and everyone around me. It took me months to even go near cabbage. Months.
For a long period of time I was well, what I’d consider to be ‘skinny’. I loved, loved, loved my legs. They looked good in anything. And then I got sick, which in turn made me so tired I couldn’t move and the result was that I gained more weight than I ever have in my life.
I was miserable.
And then something happened. I lost all of that weight that I had gained. I don’t really know how. It sort of just, dropped off. And guess what.
I was still miserable.
Fast forward a couple of years and the weight is back on and it’s back with a vengeance.
It’s an incredibly hard life when you’re unhappy with your body. It doesn’t matter what people tell you – if you feel a certain way, that’s it. Now don’t me wrong, compliments are a wonderful thing, and I don’t want to not be told I look good even if I feel like crap. But do you know what I want? I want to be able to wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and feel positive. I also want to walk into a shop with confidence, pick something up and say to myself – yes. This will look good. But the sad reality is that sometimes you walk into a shop, try on a hundred different things and stand in the changing room angry and unhappy.
I’m sick of feeling that way.
So – I decided that instead of trying to lose weight, I would try and be healthy. It’s an interesting mindset to have when you decide the outcome isn’t to lose weight, but to just make sure your body is working the way it should be. And you know what. This whole mindset change has completely made this process 100% easier.
With the help of my friend (she was my boyfriends friend and then I stole her and now he can’t have her back ever again, but it’s OK he can have her husband) Nicole at Real Healthy, I started to make changes. It started with working out how to get myself motivated, how to get a better nights sleep, and how to get on top of my anxiety.
Then she said “lets carb cycle together”, and I was like – what?
Nicole basically describes a carb cycle as a “2 week, 4 day rotational cycle.” You go no carb (under 10g), low carb (under 20g), medium carb (under 50g), and high carb (under 70g).
Note: Nicole put together this plan for me personally, and it can be done in many different ways. Carb cycling is NOT a long term diet or eating plan, she has used this particular plan for me personally to give my body a boost and kickstart into getting healthy.

It’s been two weeks – so here’s my list of thoughts, things, etc etc:
- I’ve barely drunk any wine. SHOCKING I KNOW. But a glass of wine is about 10grams of carbs and to be honest I’d rather cram in some rice noodles than wine
- Label reading – not obsessively. I’m not silly, I know what crap they put in food. Well at least I THOUGHT I DID. I picked up a “healthy drink” the other day and it had 30 grams of carbs in it. WHAT.
- If something contains that amount of carbs, keep reading the label because the amount of sugar in foods you’d not expect to see sugar in, is shocking
- Eating healthy does incredible things to your body. I’ve noticed changes in things that I have struggled with for years. Like.. I haven’t had an IBS flare up in two weeks
- Did I mention I had PMS and didn’t get a pimple at all? This may be a coincidence but who cares, a win is a win
- Carbs aren’t the devil – we just consume such high quantities because we don’t realise the sort of things they’re in
- Eating healthy is super fun and my cooking has actually improved
- Scales are irritating
- Gin is really nice with soda water and lime
- You can go to the movies with friends and smuggle in a salad and you won’t feel gross or bloated afterwards – not joking by the way, I ate a whole tank salad while watching Lion *insert crush on Dev Patel here*
- I haven’t been bloated in two weeks, what is this madness
Yeah ok Ashleigh just answer the big question.. did you lose any weight?
YES. WHY YES. I DID. 1 kilo and 940 grams people. in TWO WEEKS.
Now let me clear something up. This isn’t a permanent change. This is about creating balance, educating myself and looking after myself. I’m not trying to sell you a fad diet, I am not becoming a health food blogger/fitness guru/clean eater. I am simply just trying to make positive changes because…
I don’t want to be miserable anymore.
