Trust Your Gut

I can still recall the moment so clear in my head. I can hear myself saying ‘uh oh’ and running to the bathroom – that was nearly 5 years ago, and since then, nothing has been the same (other than my rushes to the bathroom, they don’t seem to change very often)

Why am I bringing up my bathroom habits? Well – it’s simple. I have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) My gut issues have been on and off for as long as I can remember. And to be honest with you, it wasn’t only my gut that was affected. I had a below the knee rash from my mid teens to early 20’s that was always infected, always sore, and always really aggravated at particular times (and I know when I’ve eaten a no no food, because as soon as I do, those legs flare up) They have lately, and it really, really sucks.

But it wasn’t until about 3 years ago, after seeing 3 different doctors along with a lot of trial and error, based my own research, to get to where I am today.

Be careful when doing your own research. Take it easy. Your health IS IMPORTANT. Always advise your doctor about what you’re doing.

So if you have IBS, IBD, an intolerance of sorts, or you’re just unwell, here is some of what I did, my advice, my thoughts – I won’t go overboard, so if you have any questions, just ask!image

  • Trust your gut. If something makes you feel lousy, don’t eat it
  • Trust not only your gut, but your body as well. It tells you a lot – weird rashes, hot flushes… there has to be reason behind them
  • Get a second opinion. And a third if you have to. No doctor is the same, and some pick up on things others didn’t
  • Pills don’t fix everything
  • Write things down. Don’t be obsessive – but if you have a coffee and it makes you feel crap, note it down
  • In time, don’t be afraid to eliminate and reintroduce. Even if it has been 3 years since you ate it last (unless you’re Coeliac or allergic, don’t even try, be safe team)
  • Don’t stress – it will make it worse
  • Eating is easier than you think. Meat and 3 veg may end up becoming your close friend for awhile, but it wont be forever
  • Accidents happen – be honest with the people around you that you can trust. YOU NEED SUPPORT
  • Don’t let it tear you down. Remain confident, it’s a hurdle in life, not a stop sign. You WILL get through this
  • Not everyone is the same – I can’t eat a lot of Gluten/Wheat based products. Another friend of mine is Dairy Free, another, can’t have Onions. Find your food weakness, and avoid it
  • People will say it wasn’t like this back in their day. Educate them, times have changed
  • Food, even when you are limited, is fun, remember that just because you cannot eat that, doesn’t mean you can’t eat something else

And the biggest thing to remember?

ITS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given in your allergy/health journey?

  1. Nearly 3 months ago I went to a naturopath and had an allergy test done, only to find out that I was allergic to gluten and dairy and also sulphites. I cut them out of my diet and have never felt better. I was overweight, lethargic, pale, a itchy blotchy red rash, had a foggy brain and IBS. I have now lost nearly 10kg, have more energy, sleep better, and I’m not as pale as I once was. I had an idea of what foods were bad for me but didn’t know for sure, it was hard at first but now I’m used to it. The naturopath also said that she thought I had leaky gut syndrome and Told me to take orthoplex intesta clear which would help fix the leaky gut and probiotics. Its the best thing I’ve ever done for my health and wellbeing, and I would never want to go back to the way I was!
