Today is Orange Friday – a day for our country to create awareness and stand up against domestic abuse.
It’s everywhere. You may not even know it – someone you know may be or may have suffered, it’s more common than you think. On average, New Zealand Police will answer a domestic abuse call every 5 minutes. That’s 228 calls a day. That’s 1596 calls a week. That’s 82,992 a year. That number is larger than the amount of people that live in Taupo, Rotorua, Whangarei, New Plymouth.. you get the idea.
Domestic abuse in New Zealand is high – and the sad fact is that it’s usually a family member, or someone close to you that you love, that’s doing the abusing. And it’s not OK.
If you or someone you know is living in a domestically abusive situation, don’t be afraid to reach out, to get help. Remember that right now, you may not feel it, but you are strong, you are worthy and you deserve to feel safe.
I’ve created the below recipe (and donated) to show my support to Orange Friday . I urge you to show your support, donate if you can, wear a bright orange shirt or a bright orange full piece tuxedo if you have one! Anything you can do to bring awareness to domestic abuse, is better than doing nothing at all.
I chose Candied Oranges as my Orange Friday dish, as I felt they were a sweet, delicious treat, and something that could put a smile on anyones face.

Today is Orange Friday – www.orangefriday.org.nz – a day for our country to create awareness and stand up against Domestic Abuse. As well as donating, I have put together an orange recipe, to help raise awareness. Link in bio. If you or someone you know is suffering, don't be afraid to reach out, to get help. Remember that right now, you may not feel it, but you are strong, you are worthy and you deserve to feel safe.
1 1/4 cups of Caster Sugar
1/2 a cup of Water
A small handful of Dark Cooking Chocolate
In a small pot bring your Sugar and Water to a simmer. Add sliced Oranges and leave it simmer, stirring now and again (so nothing sticks together) until the Sugar and Water start of form a syrup (this time all really depends – mine took about 20 or so minutes)
Heat your oven to 150 deg – place your Orange Slices on a tray (I actually used the lid to my pyrex baking dish, as I knew they’d be easier to get off glass) and sprinkle more Sugar over the top of the Orange slices (you’ll use about a tsp)
Place in the oven for approx half an hour or until the oranges have soaked up all the liquid and you can see a stickiness forming – turning every 10 or so minutes.
Melt your Chocolate, and as soon as you have pulled the Orange Slices out of the oven, dunk them into the Chocolate. Place in the fridge to set for about 10 minutes.
I’d love to know what you did to contribute to Orange Friday – so please, leave me a comment below.
